Unicode
Computers store all data in a binary format, utilizing zeros and ones.
- Each letter displayed here is stored on the server as a sequence of zeros and ones.
- This binary data must be transmitted from the server to your browser, which then interprets the data accurately.
- In the early days of computing, various systems used different binary codes for textual characters, lacking a universal standard (e.g., 01100001 for
'a'
, 01100010 for'b'
). - The introduction of Unicode in the 1980s revolutionized this by establishing a universal standard for text characters.
- Prior to Unicode, different programs or organizations had their own methods for storing and rendering text, necessitating "translators" to facilitate communication between them.
- Unicode faced challenges as many organizations were reluctant to overhaul their existing systems to adopt the new specification. - To address this, Unicode introduced various symbol sets to ensure compatibility with legacy systems. - Over time, the number of symbols expanded to tens of thousands, with the count now moving into the hundreds of thousands. - Emojis are considered text symbols and are continuously developed by the Unicode working group. - New emojis are regularly added to Unicode to reflect evolving communication needs.
- This extensive and diverse array of symbols exists due to the evolution and expansion of Unicode. - The wide range of symbols and fonts available, including those for Instagram, is a result of this development. - I've compiled various fonts that can be enjoyable to use and customize for your Instagram bio. - Feel free to mix and match elements from different fonts to create a unique style.
Text Fonts or Text Symbols?
- ASCII characters represent the initial 128 symbols in the Unicode standard, which form the text you are currently reading.
- However, Unicode encompasses a vast range of symbols beyond these initial 128 characters.
- Among these extended symbols, there are several that resemble the standard Latin alphabet (i.e., characters that appear similar to English text).
- This similarity allows for the creation of "pseudo-alphabets" that mimic traditional ASCII text but include variations such as bold, italic, or even upside-down styles.
- These "pseudo-alphabets" are not always flawless; they are essentially "Unicode hacks" that utilize a variety of symbols from the extensive collection of over 100,000 symbols in the Unicode standard.
- By leveraging these diverse symbols, we can achieve unique typographic effects and styles not achievable with standard ASCII alone.
The term "font" actually refers to a set of graphics that correspond to some or all of the Unicode glyphs. You've probably heard of "Comic Sans" and "Arial" - these are fonts. What you're copying and pasting above are actually symbols that exist in every font. So the cursive text and other fancy letters that you're seeing above are actually separate character, just like "a" and "b" are separate characters.
Copy and Paste
- Why does it matter that these are separate characters? The answer is simple: you do!
- If these were just standard fonts, you wouldn’t be able to copy and paste them effectively. For example, copying text in Comic Sans for use in your Instagram bio would not work because the symbols copied are normal ASCII characters.
- The appearance of these characters depends on the font used by the website where they are displayed. The font rendering is determined by the website owner, not the text itself.
- However, Unicode characters that look like specific fonts or styles (such as bold, italic, cursive, etc.) can be used to "emulate" a font.
- This emulation allows the text to maintain a consistent style across different websites when copied and pasted, ensuring that the desired appearance is preserved.
So really, if I were to be really pedantic, this site should be called "pseudo instagram fonts". But the current name gets the point across, and it's nice and short :) So, anyway, that's why you're able to copy and paste these fonts into Instagram.
Compatability
One final note: You may notice that some of the fonts don't work on Instagram. Unfortunately Instagram filters out some of the fancy letters and symbols - probably because they don't want people to abuse certain Unicode stuff like the excessive diacritics used in the "glitch text" font that you'll see in the list.
Okay, that's all for now folks! I hope you find all these Instagram fonts useful! You can keep clicking that "show more" button, and it'll keep randomizing all the different symbol alphabets all day long. If you have a stylish text font that you've created, or you want to share some feedback, please share it here
.I'm always playing around building new websites, so if you've got any other ideas for text generators or text fonts, feel free to share those too. 𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓀𝓈 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓅𝓅𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒷𝓎! ٩( ᐛ )و
